"Fire apparatus operators" as used in this act shall mean any person who operates fire apparatus and devotes his normal working hours to operating any piece of fire apparatus, or other services directly connected with fire protection work and who are paid a stated salary or compensation for such work, directly or indirectly, by the municipality.
