Section 257.809 - Application for transfer of registration; fee; payment of difference in fee; deposit into transportation administration collection fund(1) An applicant to transfer the registration from a vehicle subject to section 801 to another vehicle subject to section 801 shall accompany the application with a transfer of registration fee of $10.00. If the registration plates are transferred to another vehicle, as provided in section 233, and if the registration plate fee for a 12-month registration for the vehicle to which the registration is transferred is greater than the registration plate fee paid upon registration of the vehicle from which the registration was removed, then, if applicable, in addition to the transfer of registration fee of $10.00, the secretary of state shall collect 1 of the registration difference fees as follows:(a) If the application for transfer of registration is accompanied by an application for a vehicle title indicating a transfer of vehicle ownership and the application for vehicle title indicates the vehicle ownership transfer is not exempt from use tax collection under section 3(3)(a) or 4bb of the use tax act, 1937 PA 94, MCL 205.93 and 205.94bb, then $5.00 must be collected.(b) If the vehicle to which the registration is being transferred has never previously been registered and the application for the last title issued was accompanied by a manufacturer certificate of origin, then $5.00 must be collected.(c) If the application for transfer of registration is not accompanied by an application for a vehicle title indicating a transfer of ownership, then the difference for the new registration must be collected.(2) If the registration plate fee for a 12-month registration for the vehicle to which the registration is transferred is less than the registration plate fee paid upon registration of the vehicle from which the registration was removed, the secretary of state shall collect a transfer of registration fee of $10.00 and a registration difference fee of $5.00 and shall not refund the difference.(3) Until October 1, 2027, a transfer of registration fee collected under this section must be deposited into the transportation administration collection fund created under section 810b.Amended by 2023, Act 129,s 10, eff. 9/29/2023.Amended by 2020, Act 102,s 1, eff. 9/29/2020.Amended by 2019, Act 88,s 10, eff. 9/30/2019.Amended by 2015, Act 78,s 7, eff. 10/1/2015.Amended by 2011, Act 159,s 30, eff. 9/30/2011.Amended by 2009, Act 99,s 10 , eff. 9/30/2009.Amended by 2008, Act 280,s 1 , eff. 9/29/2008.Amended by 2007, Act 71,s 1, eff. 9/30/2007.Amended by 2005, Act 141, s 3, eff. 9/29/2005.1949, Act 300, Eff. 9/23/1949 ;--Am. 1957, Act 90, Eff. 9/27/1957 ;--Am. 1962, Act 166, Eff. 3/28/1963 ;--Am. 1978, Act 62, Imd.
