The organ recovery organizations, tissue banks and eye banks may use coordinators who are registered nurses, medical assistants or other personnel trained in the field of medicine who satisfy the pertinent standards of organ recovery organizations, tissue banks or eye banks, as adopted by the Secretary of Health to assist in the medical administration [of] organ donors or in the recovery, through surgery, of cadaveric organs, tissues and corneas for research or transplants. A coordinator who assists in the medical administration of organ donors or in the recovery through surgery of cadaveric organs, tissues or eyes for research or transplants shall do so under the direction and supervision of [a] medical doctor authorized pursuant to the rules and regulations to be adopted by the Secretary of Health. With the exception of the recovery of organs, the supervision could be an indirect supervision. For the purposes of this section, the term “indirect supervision” means that the medical director is responsible for the medical acts of the coordinator, that the coordinator is operating under protocols expressly approved by the medical director, and that the medical director or his designated physician is always available, personally or by telephone, to provide medical instruction, for consultation or counseling in the case or donation or recovery of organs tissues and corneas.
