Section 3 - Requisites for Admission to the Bar

Every applicant for admission to the Bar of this state shall meet all of the following requirements:

(A) Have reached the age of 18 years as of the date of admission.
(B) Be a citizen of the United States or an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence, or an alien otherwise authorized to work lawfully in the United States. [Amended effective January 1, 2009]
(C) Have demonstrated sound mind, good moral character and fitness to practice law in accordance with Section 5 of this Rule.
(D) Be a graduate of a law school located in the United States or its territories that is accredited by the American Bar Association as of the date on which a juris doctorate or its equivalent is conferred on the applicant. If an applicant is a graduate of a law school that is not located in the United States or its territories, such applicant must submit an application for an equivalency determination in accordance with Section 6 of this Rule.
(E) Have submitted a written certification of graduation and fitness by the dean or chancellor of the law school from which the applicant graduated.
(F) Satisfactorily complete the written examination as provided in Sections 7 and 8 of this Rule.
(G) Submit an application for admission to the Bar, request the preparation of a character report in accordance with Section 4 of this Rule, and pay the applicable fees as provided in the Appendix of this Rule.
(H) Upon satisfactorily fulfilling all requisites outlined in (A) through (G) above, have been administered the oath in person by a sitting justice, the clerk, or deputy clerk of the Louisiana Supreme Court.

If the requirement outlined in (C) above is satisfied by an applicant who is an alien authorized to work lawfully in the United States for a period of less than five (5) years, after fulfilling all other requisites for admission set forth above, such applicant shall be required to provide proof of continued authorization to work lawfully in the United States on an annual basis to the Louisiana State Bar Association in accordance with the provisions set forth in Section 16 of this Rule.
