Sec. 18.
"Contact precautions" means safeguards intended to prevent transmission of infectious agents in health care facilities of diseases or conditions that are spread primarily by direct or indirect contact. Direct contact transmission involves skin-to-skin contact and physical transfer of microorganisms to a susceptible host from an infected or colonized person. Indirect contact transmission involves skin-to-inanimate-object contact where the object serves as the vehicle for the physical transfer of microorganisms from an infected individual to a susceptible host. For details of the precautions, see Guideline for Isolation Precautions: Preventing Transmission of Infectious Agents in Healthcare Settings 2007.
